Preventive Gum Care

Gum disease is one of the most common dental conditions, and in many cases, one of the most preventable.

It often begins quietly, with subtle signs like bleeding when brushing or slight gum irritation. Left untreated, it can progress and begin to affect the supporting structures of the teeth.

Early treatment focuses on stopping gum disease before it develops further, helping to restore gum health and prevent more complex problems.

At our practice, gum disease care is centred around early detection, gentle treatment and ongoing support.

How Gum Disease Can Affect Your Oral Health

Gum disease develops in stages.

Success stories. Real outcomes

“Alex was fantastic. I went for the extraction of a broken tooth, but I didn't even know he had taken it out. I haven't been to a dentist for 12 years. I am definitely using this one. The aftercare is great. Shame the front of the building doesn't represent the great decor inside. The staff are very friendly and pleasant, which is a good thing to keep you calm. I guess you can tell I don't like the dentist, but I shook hands with Alex, a great man.”

Patient stories

“I went in after I had a severely broken wisdom tooth with an ongoing infection. NHS wouldn’t remove it and wanted to put me on a 3-year wait list. I called another private dentist, who was unable to do it, in case it was surgical, but passed me the number of Gwersyllt Dental. They were absolutely fantastic. I was very nervous, having been in pain for over a week and made out as if it was a really big deal extraction, but all the staff and the dentist were absolutely brilliant, I couldn’t fault them! Thank you so much. He'll be back!”

Patient stories

“I have an extreme phobia of dentists, following a very bad experience some 30 years ago. This resulted in my having to have full dentures. Gwersyllt and Dr Tirca have been brilliant. The care, treatment and understanding I received were second to none. Every step was explained and taken slowly to ensure I felt at ease. I am surprised at the fit and match of the dentures. Thank you all.”

Patient stories

“All staff are very friendly, polite and helpful. Mr Tirca is very diligent and professional, recently helping me with an ongoing issue. Check-up appointments are always arranged to your convenience.”

Patient stories

“You're greeted with a lovely smile and a great welcome. The surgery is spotless, the dentist is exceptional, all is explained in detail with the work to be carried out, all the staff are friendly and helpful, would definitely recommend it to anyone who is looking for great dental care. Thank you to all who work there.”

Frequently asked questions

Can gum disease be reversed?

Early-stage gum disease (gingivitis) can often be reversed with professional cleaning and good oral hygiene.

More advanced gum disease cannot be reversed, but can be managed effectively with the right treatment.

Do I need to see a hygienist for gum disease?

Yes. Hygienist appointments play an important role in removing plaque and tartar and helping to maintain gum health over time.

They are often a key part of both treatment and prevention.

Is gum disease painful?

Gum disease is not always painful, especially in its early stages.

This is why regular check-ups are important, as signs of gum disease can be identified before discomfort develops.

What happens if gum disease is left untreated?

If untreated, gum disease can progress and begin to affect the bone supporting the teeth.

This can lead to gum recession, tooth mobility and, in more advanced cases, tooth loss.

When is periodontal treatment needed?

If gum disease progresses beyond the early stages, more advanced treatment may be required.

This is known as periodontal care, which focuses on managing deeper infection and supporting the long-term health of the gums and bone.
