Skilled Care for Gum Health

Gum health plays a fundamental role in the stability of your teeth and the long-term health of your mouth.

When gum disease progresses, it can begin to affect not only the gums but also the supporting bone around the teeth. In more advanced cases, this may lead to gum recession, tooth mobility and eventual tooth loss if left untreated.

Periodontics focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of more advanced gum conditions, helping to stabilise oral health and prevent further damage.

Your periodontal care is delivered with a focus on early intervention, precise treatment and long-term maintenance.

Treatment journey

Step 1

Assessment & Diagnosis

We assess your gum health using clinical examination and digital imaging where needed. This helps identify the severity of the condition and guide treatment planning.

Step 2

Treatment & Stabilisation

Treatment may involve non-surgical or surgical approaches depending on the extent of gum disease. The aim is to remove infection, reduce inflammation and stabilise the supporting structures of the teeth.

Step 3

Maintenance & Monitoring

After treatment, ongoing periodontal maintenance is important to support healing and prevent recurrence. This may include regular professional cleaning and review appointments.

Our Promise

Gum disease can feel overwhelming, particularly if you’ve been told it is advanced. At Smile Society, we focus on making treatment clear, manageable and tailored to your needs.

You will be guided through each stage of care, with time to understand your options and ask questions.

Types of Periodontal Treatment

Periodontal care may involve a combination of treatments depending on your individual needs.

  • Root Surface Debridement
A deep cleaning technique that removes plaque and tartar from below the gum line. This helps reduce bacteria and allows the gums to begin healing.

Specialist Periodontal Care

For more advanced periodontal treatment, Smile Society works with a visiting periodontist who joins the practice on a regular basis.

This allows patients to access specialist-level care within a familiar environment, without needing to be referred elsewhere.

Success stories. Real outcomes

“Alex was fantastic. I went for the extraction of a broken tooth, but I didn't even know he had taken it out. I haven't been to a dentist for 12 years. I am definitely using this one. The aftercare is great. Shame the front of the building doesn't represent the great decor inside. The staff are very friendly and pleasant, which is a good thing to keep you calm. I guess you can tell I don't like the dentist, but I shook hands with Alex, a great man.”

Patient stories

“I went in after I had a severely broken wisdom tooth with an ongoing infection. NHS wouldn’t remove it and wanted to put me on a 3-year wait list. I called another private dentist, who was unable to do it, in case it was surgical, but passed me the number of Gwersyllt Dental. They were absolutely fantastic. I was very nervous, having been in pain for over a week and made out as if it was a really big deal extraction, but all the staff and the dentist were absolutely brilliant, I couldn’t fault them! Thank you so much. He'll be back!”

Patient stories

“I have an extreme phobia of dentists, following a very bad experience some 30 years ago. This resulted in my having to have full dentures. Gwersyllt and Dr Tirca have been brilliant. The care, treatment and understanding I received were second to none. Every step was explained and taken slowly to ensure I felt at ease. I am surprised at the fit and match of the dentures. Thank you all.”

Patient stories

“All staff are very friendly, polite and helpful. Mr Tirca is very diligent and professional, recently helping me with an ongoing issue. Check-up appointments are always arranged to your convenience.”

Patient stories

“You're greeted with a lovely smile and a great welcome. The surgery is spotless, the dentist is exceptional, all is explained in detail with the work to be carried out, all the staff are friendly and helpful, would definitely recommend it to anyone who is looking for great dental care. Thank you to all who work there.”

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between gum disease treatment and periodontics?

Gum disease treatment often refers to early-stage care, such as managing gingivitis.

Periodontics focuses on more advanced gum conditions, including periodontitis, where deeper structures such as bone may be affected.

Is periodontal treatment painful?

Treatment is carried out with your comfort in mind, and a local anaesthetic is used where needed.

Many patients find the process more manageable than expected, particularly as treatment helps relieve symptoms such as inflammation and discomfort.

Can gum disease be reversed?

Early-stage gum disease (gingivitis) can often be reversed with good oral hygiene and professional care.

More advanced gum disease (periodontitis) cannot be fully reversed, but it can be effectively managed and stabilised with appropriate treatment.

How long does periodontal treatment take?

Treatment time varies depending on the severity of the condition.

Some treatments may be completed over a few appointments, while more advanced cases may require longer-term care and maintenance.

Will I need ongoing treatment?

Yes. Periodontal care usually involves ongoing maintenance to help prevent the condition from returning.

Regular check-ups and professional cleaning play an important role in maintaining gum health after treatment.
