Who else might benefit from laser gum treatment?

While a gummy smile is the most common reason patients seek this treatment, there are several other situations where gum laser recontouring plays an important clinical role.

• Gum disease and gingival infections. When periodontal disease creates pockets between the teeth and gums where bacteria and debris accumulate, laser surgery, sometimes called gingival flap surgery, can remove the affected tissue and eliminate those spaces. Left untreated, these pockets leave teeth vulnerable to further decay and bone loss.
• Gum recession. As gum disease progresses, gum tissue can shrink back from the teeth, exposing the root surfaces. This often causes sensitivity and discomfort. Laser gum surgery can be used to help restore missing tissue and protect the exposed areas.
• Crown lengthening. If a tooth has been damaged below the gum line, whether through decay, trauma, or a fracture, it may not be accessible for restoration without first exposing more of the tooth structure. Laser recontouring allows us to uncover the tooth so that it can be properly repaired and, where necessary, fitted with a crown.

Is it expensive?
