At Smile Society, we believe that great dentistry starts below the surface. Gum disease is one of the most common and most overlooked dental conditions in the UK, yet left untreated, it can silently damage the bone supporting your teeth and even affect your wider health. Our periodontal care is designed to catch problems early, treat them effectively, and keep your gums in optimal health for the long term.
Whether you’ve noticed bleeding gums, sensitivity around the gum line, or you’ve been told by another dentist that you need specialist treatment, our team at Smile Society is here to help.
When gums pull back from the teeth, a condition known as gum recession, the sensitive root surface beneath becomes exposed. This can cause discomfort, increase the risk of decay, and affect the appearance of your smile.
A connective tissue graft covers the exposed root, protecting it from erosion and restoring a more natural, balanced gum line. For suitable patients, we also offer tunnelling treatment, a highly conservative approach with minimal downtime and success rates consistently in the 90th percentile.
A healthy mouth isn’t just about your teeth. Let Smile Society help you build the strong foundations your smile deserves.
This is often the first line of defence against active gum disease. Using a combination of hand instruments and ultrasonic scalers, we carefully remove bacterial plaque and calculus (tartar) from the root surfaces beneath the gum line. The goal is to disrupt the disease process before it progresses to the bone.
Depending on the severity of your condition, we may recommend a course of treatment across multiple visits.
Crown lengthening gently removes excess gum tissue to create a healthier, more proportionate balance between your teeth and gums. It can be performed for aesthetic reasons, improving what’s sometimes called a “gummy smile”, or functionally, to expose enough of a tooth structure to allow a crown or bridge to be placed effectively.
For more advanced cases of gum disease, periodontal regeneration aims to rebuild what has been lost. This may involve a combination of approaches, including guided tissue regeneration (GTR) to encourage the regrowth of healthy gum tissue, bone replacement grafts to address bone loss caused by advanced periodontitis, and pocket reduction procedures to prevent bacteria from continuing to colonise beneath the gum line.
Dental implants can be affected by a condition called peri-implantitis, essentially gum disease around an implant, which, if left unaddressed, can compromise the implant itself. At Smile Society, we offer specialist assessment and treatment to rescue affected implants and put a clear prevention plan in place to protect them going forward.
When periodontal pockets, gaps between the teeth and gums, have formed, bacteria can be difficult to remove with brushing alone. A gingivectomy involves carefully trimming away the affected gum tissue to eliminate these pockets, making the area far easier to keep clean and reducing the risk of disease recurrence.
Treating gum disease is only half the journey. We’ll work with you to put a personalised maintenance plan in place, with tailored check-up intervals and professional cleaning sessions designed to keep your gums stable and healthy following treatment, including ongoing care for implants that have been treated for peri-implantitis.
